The composition and content of the organic pollutants in silt, sampled from sixrepresentative areas of Jiangsu province, and their variation rules along with seasons andlays were investigated in this paper, in order to provide the basic data and suggestions forthe integrative use of dredged silt and the dredge projects. Firstly, an appropriate extractionmethod was chosen to extract the pollutants from the silt. Then qualitative analysis, classification and general quantification of the organic pollutants were made by GC/MS.Secondly, Polychlorinated Biphenyls (simply named PCBs), one of typical PersistentOrganic Pollutants, was selected for the testing aim, and the content and variation rules ofPCBs in the silt were determined by GC-ECD. Finally, transfer rules of organic pollutantsin silt before and after flocculation and dehydration were determined and compared. Theexperiment results indicated that, the sorts of organic pollutants in silt from Old Canal(2seasons), Tai Lake(3 seasons), Lianyun Harbor(4 seasons), Hengcaolu River(3 seasons),Hongze Lake(4 seasons), Xiexing Harbor(3 seasons) were 48, 104, 127, 78, 95, 67respectively. The content range of PCBs determined in silt of six areas were 0.67~4.47ng/g(Lianyun Harbor), 1.35~4.14 ng/g (Xiexing Harbor), 1.21~11.86 ng/g (Tai Lake),1.46~7.25 ng/g (Hongze Lake), 16.43~62.90 ng/g (Old Canal), 0.23~3.51 ng/g(Hengcaolu River) respectively. The recovery of extraction method was 91.1%~111.8%.PCBs were not detected in the water from silt treated by flocculation and dehydration. Thecontent and sorts of organic pollutants in the silt were related closely to the human activity. The more human activity around the area, the higher detection rate and content of organicpollutants in the silt. In summary, according to the requirements for farm uses of silt, thepollutant contents in the silt from these six areas were lower than the control standardvalues.
