Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have become an important research area due to their potential applications in flat panel displays. For full color display, the pure red, green and blue OLEDs with the high luminescent intensity have been extensively developed for recent years. So far, the blue and green OLED displays have made great progresses, especially in the commercial sense. However, red OLEDs with high performance still need to be improved.Oligomeric phenylene vinylenes (OPVs) as luminescent material have some unique photo-electric properties. In this thesis, the other functional elements were introduced into the OPV structure, which were expected as red emission materials without losing the property of OPV.The thesis consists of the following studies:1. To obtain the molecules with red emission, five target compounds were designed and synthesized.2. All target compounds were characterized by 1~H NMR,13~C NMR,IR,TOF-MS and element analysis. The structure of compound C is further determined by the X-ray diffraction of its single crystal.3. Optical properties (absorption and fluorescence) and thermal stabilities of all the target compounds were studied utilizing the spectra analysis and TGA, respectively. The energy levels of their frontier molecular orbitals were evaluated by the corresponding cyclic voltametric experiments.4. Fabrication using the zinc complex of compound C as a dopant resulted in an electroluminescent device with emission at 556 nm...
