In this paper, the fracture mechanics on self-healing composites material containing microcapsules is studied. The goal is when there is a crack inside the composites under the effect of outside environment and the front part of the crack meets the microcapsules, the microcapsule shell can break at the right moment. Then the self-healing function of the composites are realized.The following four parts are involved in the paper: the fracture mechanics design of self-healing composites, the fracture toughness tests of the matrices and the capsule shells, the fracture characteristics analysis of the sandwich simulating sample and the fracture confirmation experiment of sample containing simulating capsule. In the paper, firstly the fracture toughness of different samples are tested; then the sandwich simulation samples in different scope of the fracture toughness margin between matrices and capsule shells are manufactured, and the relations of the crack propagation and fracture toughness matching between the shells of capsule and matrices are studied through analyzing crack propagation laws of the sandwich simulating sample; Finally the crack propagation laws is confirmed through the fracture confirmation experiment of sample containing simulating capsule. The results show that: as the fracture toughness margin of matrices and capsule shells are less than 107754.45 Pam1/2, the capsule shell can break when the crack propagate.
