Clay minerals are the general name of fine dispersing layered hydrous silicates and amorphous hydrous silicate minerals. The main structure unit of clay minerals contains silicon-oxygen tetrahedron and aluminium-oxygen octahedron. That structure characteristics determine the clay minerals swell and disperse easily in aqueous solutions. This is an essential reason of formation damage caused by clay in the oil field development.Drilling fluid is the first external fluid which contacts the hydrocarbon reservoir and often invades the reservoir more or less under the certain pressure. If filtrate of drilling fluid is not compatible with the reservoir, that is very possible to cause the clay expand, water blocking, emulsification and chemical flocculation sedimentation, resulting in reservoir harm. Many factors lead the clay mineral to swell and disperse, it is not only determined the composition and structure of glues on the mineral but also related to the factors of particle surface exchangeable cation ingredient, the dispersion medium nature and son on. But the basic reason is that the function for the clay mineral and water. Generally this function includes the hydrogen bond strength caused by the clay mineral itself polarize, itself electrostatic polarizing power as well as the hydrous power resulted in electrostatic attraction opposition (it is called Osmotic pressure). In those powers the hydrated strength produced by the static electricity is very important and occupies the leading position, therefore, the clay mineral zeta potential research is the inhibitory research strategic point.There are many methods to analyze the clay mineral physics and chemistry function. But it seldom to report the clay mineral research. These characteristic, such as the clay mineral disperser the inflation, the contraction, caves in, seepage and so on, are close relation with zeta potential size. So we can use potential size to judge the clay mineral the inflation, the disperser, performance and the-inhibition function of the drilling fluid. So long as the positive zeta potential drilling fluid is high, the suppression ability of the clay is strong. That can achieve the table borehole, improving the speed of well drilling, protecting hydrocarbon reservoir and reducing environmental. Therefore the clay mineral and drilling of electric properties research has the practical and theory significance.This article then through the research treating agent to the clay particle electric properties and the hydrated characteristic influence, analysis clay particle electric properties and the hydrated suppression between relations, and the hope findings may use in instructing the development or the optimal drilling fluid treating agent, the optimized drilling fluid formula, the analysis treating agent action mechanism and establishes the new suppression assessment method.
