Based on the need of sensitizer and electrolyte in dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC), two series of bifunctional polymeric photovoltaic materials containing sensitizer and hole-transporting group were designed and synthesized.Firstly, two kinds of bipyridine ruthenium complexes RudmbpyCl2 (Ru-1) and Ru[bpy(COOEt)2]2Cl2} (Ru-2) were synthesized according to literature, respectively. Their chemical structures were confirmed by 1H NMR and Ft-IR. UV-vis spectra showed that both Ru-1 and Ru-2 have strong absorption in the range of 300-700 nm, which is quite matching with the solar spectrum. On the other hand, their energy band determined by cyclic voltammorgram (CV) also can match with the energy band of TiO2.Secondly, two kinds of terpolymers, methyl methacrylate-vinyl carbazole-vinyl pyridine copolymer ( abbr. as PV) and methyl methacrylate-vinyl carbazole-acrylic acid copolymer (abbr. as PA), were prepared by radical polymerization, respectively. The carbazole groups can increase the hole-transporting ability of the resultant polymer. And the carboxyl and pyridyl group can make the resultant polymer have the ability to react with small molecular Ru complex. The Ru complex was intrduced into the polymeric chain by coordination reaction of the polymer with the small molecular Ru complex. The corresponding Ru-containing polymers were named as PV-Ru (PV and Ru-1) and PA-Ru (PA and Ru-2).The prepared polymers and their ruthenium complexes, PV, PA, PV-Ru and PA-Ru, were characterized by GPC, FT-IR, UV-vis, TG and CHI650, etc. FT-IR and UV-vis spectra showed that the Ru complex was successfully introduced to the polymer chain. The temperature of docomposition (Td) determined by TG of Polymer-Ru was about 50 ℃ higher than that of the corresponding parent polymer illustrating that the introduction of Ru complex can increase the thermal stability of the polymer.
