In the industrial production, the most effective, practical and economic method of grain refining is to add the grain refinement in the Al melting, Al-Ti-B is a kind of grain refinement used extensively in whole world at present, but because it has some defects of the particle diameter is smaller than that of TiB2, Al-Ti-C has stronger applying potential in foil production field. Therefore people displace the direction studied to Al-Ti-C new-type grain refinements, it has a refiner effect of grain more excellent than Al-Ti-B, overcome Al-Ti-B exposed various kinds of defects so far, the aluminum industry organization of many countries encourage that people research and produce Al-Ti-C grain refinement at present.Because the research of Al-Ti-C is still at developing stage, after the thermodynamic and kinetic analysis of the Al-Ti-C ternary system, a low cost and high efficient master alloy was synthesized by aluminothermal reaction and in-situ synthesis. The preparation method is simple, easy scale production. Microstructures of Al-Ti-C master alloys synthesized in the new method and the grain center of Al refined by the master alloy were studied using SEM and X-ray diffraction, the possible refinement mechanism were analyzed and discussed. On the basis of refining experiment of grain, have observed the refiner grain core, we have probe the possible refiner mechanism and solved the grain refinement kept the invalid problem under melting aluminium alloy for a long time tentatively. The grain refining experiment shows that the Al-Ti-C master alloy prepared by the new craft has totally reached the production refining effect of Al-5Ti-B produc ed by Britain, there is better nucleation efficiency.
