STEP-NC is a new data interface, proposed recently by some European countries, United States, Korea etc, to replace ISO 6983 (G, M codes). STEP-NC is an extension of STEP (ISO 10303) into NC machining domain, realize the bidirectional data exchange between CAD, CAM and CNC, and store more information in NC program, and raise the level of intelligence of CNC.CNC machining simulation can validate the CNC programs, avoid the occurrence of interference and collision, it can shorten the time of developing products, reduce the cost of manufacture, and improve the quality of product and product efficiency. This paper develops a 3D simulation system for turning machining based on STEP-NC. The simulation system can simulate the turning process. The simulation system is developed using Java language and JOGL API. This simulation system is made up of three modules: STEP-NC program parsing module, toolpath generator module and modeling and simulation module. The STEP-NC program parsing module analyzes the STEP-NC program, extracting the feature information in STEP-NC program. Concrete work includes mapping from EXPRESS to Java, extracting feature information using Java class or function, display the feature information in form of information tree.Toolpath generator module generates the tool path for the machining of turning feature extracted from STEP-NC program. The feature information is extracted by the first module.Modeling and simulation module builds the simulation platform using Java and JOGL. Then this module simulates the machining process of turning feature using toolpath generated by toolpath generator module. This paper only discuss several simple turning features, such as facing, contouring.
