Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a sort of hydrocarbons that have two or more phenyls by sharing two contiguous carbon atoms at their molecular structures. PAHs come into being by pyrogenation and congregation when hydrocarbons burn at high temperature and anoxic conditions, so they are incomplete combustion products. Most of PAHs are toxic and carcinogenic such as Benzo[a]Pyrene. Tobacco smoke contains hundreds of PAHs, which is very important harmful material in cigarette. For the current trend of reducing tar and harmful stuff in tobacco, we have studied on PAHs in tobacco smoke from several aspects. This paper is consisted of five parts, including establishing analysis method for PAHs of cigarette smoke, analyzing the PAHs of mainstream smoke and (MS) sidestream smoke (SS) , research on PAHs forming by pyrolysis of some important cigarette materials , effect of filter ventilation on PAHs in cigarette MS, primary study on PAHs from environmental tobacco smoke (ETS).Firstly analytical method of PAHs in tobacco smoke must be established. In this experiment a new method for quantitative determination of sixteen PAHs in tobacco smoke have been developed and applied to analyze the PAHs in cigarette smoke from 100 commercial brands with different tar levels. The PAHs from sample cigarette smoke were firstly extracted with cyclo-hexane and purified by solid- phase extraction column (SPEM), and then measured by GC/MS with selection ion method (SIM). By using this analytical method, more than ten representative PAHs including Benzo[a]Pyrene have been determined simultaneously. The recovery and lowest test limit and recurrence of PAHs have been investigated, it's results showed well .The recoveries of main PAHs were over 95%,which suggested that the analysis method was simple, accurate, sensitive and stable, and that it is a perfect method for analyzing PAHs of cigarette smoke. In the second experiment the quantitative determinations of PAHs in MS and SS from 100 commercial brands with different tar levels were performed by established GC/MS method with SIM .The results showed that generally speaking their components are same between MS and SS, but with generic accessorial materials its concentration of each PAH from SS is always higher than that form MS except for naphthalene and fluorene. The excellent interdependency was found between PAHs and tar level in MS, however, there was no interdependence in SS.
