Tripodal ligands and their complexations are attracting considerable attention in the area of coordination chemistry. These complexes usually contain more cooperative atoms, furthermore, the attachment of three flexible, donor-atom-containing chains to a framework leads to tripodal ligands, which can form stable complexes with many metal cations, such as alkali metal, alkaline earth metal and transition metal cations. Tripadol ligands and their complexes represent excellent capability and fine application prospect in many fields, such as coordination chemistry, electrochemistry, medicine, agricultural chemical, catalytic chemistry, biochemistry and supramolecular chemistry. For further study in this field, in this paper, we synthesized a series of new tripodal compounds and their transition metal ion complexes. All of them were characterized by spectra.(1) A new tripodal compound (L1) containing S, N atom was prepared by using l,l,l-tris(hydroxymethyl)ethane p-methylphenylsulfonyl chloride salicylaldehyde, 2-methy-8-hydroxyquinolin as materials. The synthesis of the new tripodal compound is shown as follows.NOBnCO OCC=N-N N-NOCO OCC=N-N N-N I II,CH/ H0BnO?C,H?2"5.0QCO OCC=N-N N-N■>OHo,OCNN=CH(3) A new tripodal compound containing N atom (L$) was prepared by using the tris(aminoethyl)amine, 2-methyl-8-hydroxyquinoline, acetic anhydride as materials. The synthesis of the new tripodal compound is shown as follows.+ (CH3CO)2O refluxH,COCOCH,H,CNSeOj.0OCOCH,OHCOCOCH,All of the tripodal compounds (L1-L5) are new compounds which haven't been reported before. The structures proposed for the new compounds are consistent with the data obtained from their EA, IR, UV and 'H NMR spectra.(4) Thirteen complexes of the tripodals with transition metal cations (Cd2+,Co3+,Ni2+,Cu2+,Fe3+) were prepared and characterized. By contrasting the IR spectra of tripodals and their complexes, it is found that the vibration absorptions of C-N-N, C=N , O-H have obvious shifts. The UV spectra of the ligands and their transition metal complexes show that the maximal absorption wavelengths also have obvious shifts. These results donate that the coordinations are occurred between tripodal ligands and the transition metal ions.
