In this paper the applications of mesitylene in dyestuff, medication and chemical industry etc. were summarized. From the literatures, we generalized the merit and defect of all kinds of methods and presented that the method of extraction rectification is effective and worth of research.At the present time, the raw material was chiefly from the fraction of reforming plant, in which the content of mesitylene is very low and must be pre-treated. This raw material was pre-treated with batch rectification. We determined the relation of the temperature and the content of mesitylene to search the optimium operating condition, which assured the content and the yield of mesitylene high. After pre-treated, the raw material contained only the composition of mesitylene, o-ethyl-methylbenzene and 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene.From the literatures, the properties of physical chemistry and the structure of the extant various solvents, ten solvent was selected to determine the relative volatility with gas-liquid equilibrium pot. Through the comparison of the relative volatity, we concluded that the solvent of DBP was very effective to separate the aromatics of C9.The binary and ternary VLE data of mesitylene, o-ethyl-methylbenzene and 1, 2, 4-trimethylbenzene was measured in this paper and they passed the check of thermodynamics. Then along with the binary and ternary VLE data, the least square method was used to solve vapour-liquid equilibrium model. And finally, we considered that the model of Wilson is the optimum model to forecast the process of extractive rectification.To calculate the interactive parameters of DBP and mesitylene, o-ethyl-methylbenzene and 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, the method of chromatography is used in the paper to measure γ, along with the method of single parameter, to calculate the model parameters of the model of Wilson.Finally, with the language of VB, the process of extractive rectification was simulated with the method of tri-opposite angles matrix and the effect was researchedthe ratio of raw and solvent, theory plate number and the feed position of raw and the solvent on the purity of mesitylene was studied. The results of simulation provided the base of the experiment in the next step.The solvent, the VLE data and the simulation results in this paper supplied the foundation for the medium scale plane and industrilazation of mesitylene.
