Three water-solube polysaccharides, AHP-Ⅰ, AHP-Ⅱ and AHP-Ⅲ from the cortices of Acanthopanax giraldii Hams, were isolated and purified by ion-exchange chromatographies on DEAE-cellulose 32 and Sephacryl S-200.Three. fractions were shown to be homogeneous by cellulose acetate membrane electrophoresis, agarose electrophoresis and HPLC.The apparent average molecular weight of AHP-Ⅰ, AHP-Ⅱ and AHP-Ⅲ was estimated to be approximately 7.0 kD,59.5 kD and 12.9 kD respectively. Normal characterizations were found from IR. The components of three kinds of polysaccharides were identified by gas chromatography: rhamnose, arabinose, mannose, glucose and galactose were found to be in the molar radio of 0.36:1.00:0.15:0.20:1.10 in AHP-Ⅱ; rhamnose, arabinose, fucose, mannose, glucose and galactose were found to be in the molar radio of 1.22:1.00:0.40:0.28:0.26:1.03 in AHP-Ⅲ and arabinose, fucose, mannose, glucose and galactose were found to be in the molar radio of 1.00:1.40:0.64:3.13:2.09 in AHP-Ⅰ. The content of uronic acid in AHP-Ⅱ, AHP-Ⅲ was 6.7% and 6.0% respectively, and there was no uronic acid in AHP-Ⅰ. The experimentatal results indicated that the crude polysaccharide from Acanthopanax giraldii Hams ip 200 mg/kg inhibited the sarcoma proliferation of Ehrlich ascitic carcinoma.
