Friction welding is a solid phase welding technology, which has the characters of high efficiency and energy-saving. It has been extensively used in many industry fields especially in oil, automobile and aerospace industry. Because of the characters of less process parameters and high automation, inertia friction welding has been focused on recently. Based on friction theory and comprehensive analysis of inertia friction welding process, a two-dimensional axial-symmetrical transient heat transfer model has been established for inertia friction welding process. The surface heat loss of sample and the temperature dependence of thermal properties are considered. The friction coefficient which is related to temperature, pressure and rotating speed is also considered. The transient temperature field of GH4169 nickel-base superalloy welding joint during inertia friction welding process is calculated. A program with friendly interface is developed using OpenGL technology to display the temperature field vividly by contour line, contour graphics and thermal cycle curves etc.Based on the analysis of transient temperature field of inertia friction welding process, a multi-channel data acquisition system has been established, in which appropriate hardware and programming methods such as multiple threads, embedded programming technologies are adopted. The corresponding digital filter algorithms are used to remove the noises of acquired data.Using the data acquisition system, the transient temperature field is measured during inertia friction welding process by means of thermocouples. As a result, the experimental data is in good agreement with calculated data. In conclusion, this work can provide a basis for further research of stress and strain fields during inertia friction welding process.
