With the development of economy and growing in the field of new technology, the application of pipe is more wider. At the same time, the quality requirement is also more higher. Cold rolling is an important method of currently used in production of precision steel tubes processing, and the special-shaped cross-section roll is one of the important parts of cold rolling mill. Rolling operation is the main deformation of the mold, and its quality directly determines the quality and efficiency of rolling tube. As the variable cross section roll pass has its unique shape, it is difficult to process, and domestic processing equipment and technology can’t meet the needs of high quality and precision of rolling pipe. To solve the problem of low machining efficiency of special-shaped variable cross section roll pass in processing, this paper presents a turning processing method, and transforms the CA6140 lathe to make it satisfy the requirements of the special-shaped variable cross-section roll pass rough turning.This paper firstly analyzes the special-shaped variable cross-section roll groove characteristics, then designs the roll pass. We finally choose the rough turning process according to the special structure of roll and the efficiency and quality requirements. Through the modeling and motion simulation analysis of the lathe cutter radial displacement of feeding system, including the radial feed rate and feed acceleration, the graph of lathe tool linear displacement, linear velocity and linear acceleration under different spindle speed can be obtained.Then transform the CA6140 lathe, including the main transmission system, feed system design and selection of NC system and NC programming and so on to make it satisfy the machining requirements of the special variable cross section roll pass lathe turning.Finally take the LG30 series roll processing as example, and conduct experiments under the different spindle speeds by means of rough milling and rough turning respectively. Then verify the superiority of the processing efficiency by turning variable cross-section roll pass. And within the allowed spindle speed, the surface quality and machining efficiency improve with the increase of spindle speed.
