Spray development plays an important role in improving the combustion and emission characteristics. As the reserves of petroleum fuel are expected to be depleted in recent years, finding clean alternative fuels that are easing the energy and economically viable and sustainable to replace the petroleum fuel has attracted more researches’ attention.Spray characteristics of the fuel mainly depend on fuel injection pressure, fuel density, fuel viscosity, ambient pressure, nozzle diameter and ambient temperature. This study investigates the effect of the injection pressure of 80 MPa and 160 MPa, environmental ambient pressure at 0.1MPa, 1MPa and 2MPa conditions on spray macroscopic characteristics’ relevant parameters such as spray tip penetration, spray cone angle and spray projected area. The fuels used for the investigation are biodiesel derived from waste oil and diesel, the spray images of biodiesel and diesel in a constant volume spray chamber was acquired by employing Mie scattering technology. Then using the MATLAB processing processes the acquired image and using the Photoshop measures the spray macroscopic characteristics’ relevant parameters, and the results were analyzed and compared after this.The experimental results showed that longer spray tip penetration, larger pray tip speed, larger spray projected area and larger SMD, the smaller spray cone angle were observed for biodiesel compared to diesel. With the extension of the duration of injection, spray penetration, spray projected area and spray volume increases, the spray tip velocity decreases and the spray angle reduces after increasing at the beginning of the injection. As the injection pressure increases, spray penetration, spray tip velocity, spray volume and the spray projected area increases.However, SMD decreases and the spray angle does not change significantly. With the ambient pressure of the environment increasing, spray angle and the SMD increases, spray penetration, spray the top velocity and the spray projected area decreases.
