The structure of China’s energy is special. China is rich in coal resources with total ranking second in the world. Compared to that, petroleum and natural gas reserves are very scarce, resulting in the supply of methanol, olefins, oil and other primary energy fall short of demand. In recent years, China’s oil demand is gradually increased, the rate will be increased imports of crude oil, the formation of import dependency, seriously affected the stability of China’s energy structure, but also on China’s energy security Energy security has created a great risk. Coal liquefaction technology can convert abundant coal resources needed for our refined oil, good for our energy security energy security. This article is intended for two existed Coal to Liquid (CTL) technologies, the Direct Coal liquefaction (DCL) technology and the Indirect Coal liquefaction (ICL) technology. It applies the life cycle analysis (LCA) to set up the LCA model separately of the 108 ton/year DCL project factory and the 400 ton/year ICL project factory. It comprehensive evaluates on energy efficiency, environmental emissions and economy of the two technologies. By analyzing the LCA, it draw the conclusion:comparing to the factory adopted ICL technique, the factory adopted DCL technique have less CO2 emissions, lower cost and higher energy efficiency of the production of each ton of refined petroleum products. Therefore, the DLC technology has advantages over CO2 emissions, energy efficiency and economy.
