In recent years, environment-friendly packaging materials have gained increasing attention from different areas and developed more and more rapidly as people responded vigorously to the concept of ―green‖. As one part in environment-friendly packaging materials, molded pulp is the very material to replace many kinds of foamed plastics with lots of strengthes,. It has been used more and more widely in different areas. But there are some serious problems that hinder its development and application as high value-add packages severely. Therefore, to study how to improve molded pulp’s apparent properties is the only way to provide molded pulp products with additional values in packaging.On the basis of domestic and overseas research, combined with the realistic situation of our team, this project made molded pulp from old corrugated carton(OCC) and added internal agents into pulp to improve molded pulps’ comprehensive apparent performance. At the same time, used modern scientific instruments analytical methods to analyze the mechanism of how internal agents worked. To be specific, the main research included:(1) Analyzed the existing weak apparent performance of molded pulp products in usage and put forward three indicators to evaluate its apparent properties systematically.(2) Made experiments and studied the influence of fiber kinds, slurry concentration, addition of internal agents and filler on molded pulp products’ apparent performance. Then designed orthogonal test to test influence of four factors and determined the reasonable process conditions: pulp concentration is 0.8%, mass ratio of CS and CPAM is 50:1, dosage of AKD is 2% of the dry pulp, dried under 85℃ for 85 min, finally finishing under the pressure of 1.5 MPa for 2 min.(3) Utilized modern scientific instruments analytical methods to observe samples’ fiber statuses before and after internal process and made preliminary research to the deep mechanism of how agents work.Research results indicate that made molded pulp products from OCC fiber and suitable addition of internal agents can improve products’ apparent performance effectively. Molded pulp products achieved excellent apparent propertities, which provide molded pulp with the possibility of being widely used in medium and upscale packaging. Research results in this paper filled the gap of systematic research on molded pulp’s apparent properties, it provided a theoretical and experimental basis for further study improving the apparent properties of molded pulp products, which would speed up molded pulp products develop into high value-added products.
