Casting technology design is crucial to casting production process. Its appropriateness is closely linked to good casting quality. Because traditional casting technology design methods mostly depend on individual experience, they are hard to be controlled accurately. To verify the rationality of the casting process design, workers must do a lot of experiments which consume a large amount of materials and time. Since computer technology makes remarkable progress in the casting field in recent years, casting CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) software can simulate the mold filling and solidification process of castings well enough to gain people’s acceptance and application. However, the development of casting CAD (Computer Aided Design) system lags behind casting CAE software. And in the majority of the relevant research, the secondary development tools which provided by commercial 3-D (3-Dimensional) CAD software will be the disadvantage of software popularizing and upgrading. This thesis develops some functions of casting technology CAD system based on the source code of SINOVATION,3-D CAD software, which reduce designers’ labor and raise their work efficiency.SINOVATION is the development platform in this thesis. At first, the thesis meets the design requirements of programs by using general functions in SINOVATION. Then, the script programs which accomplish drawing and calculating are written in SCRIPT language provided by SINOVATION; and the interface programs are written in C++ language and based on MFC to deliver data between the script programs and interface programs. Also, database tables are made by using Microsoft Access software and accessed to the programs. Last, every program requires being compiled, linked and debugged. Thus, the function of Hot Spot Analysis, Chill Design, Sandbox Design, Core Design and Plate Design are developed.In these functions, Hot Spot Analysis employs a new calculation method of point modulus, which involves the effect of chills or insulating riser sleeves in casting heat transfer, to improve the accuracy of point modulus calculation. The thesis designs an algorithm suitable for programming to reveal the advantages of geometric simulation over numerical simulation in computational efficiency. Chill Design uses modulus method to calculate the weight of chill and it combines casting technology theories and computer graphics to get reliable visual results. Plate Design realizes parametric design with parameter driven and sets up geometric model databases of plate components. The programs make dialog and property page guide interface based on MFC, which is clear and simple, in accord with users’ operation habits and interface style of SINOVATION. Every function is independent of others, which is convenient to combine with other functions, thereby having synergetic effect. For example, the designers can use Hot Spot Analysis to find the hot spot positions. Then they design chills by Chill Design Function. And then they can employ Hot Spot Analysis again to observe the change of hot spot positions to evaluate the effect of the chill. According to the results, designers can optimize the chill design.Casting technology CAD system developed in this thesis meets the demands of casting technology designers for hot spot positions prediction, chill, sandbox, core and plate design. User-friendly interface and abundant database resources can liberate designers from consulting casting manuals, shorten casting design period, and avoid miscalculation caused by human factors. Furthermore, since this thesis develops functions based on the source code of 3-D CAD\CAM software, the visual design includes complete geometric information, which is easy to transmit data between SINOVATION and CAE software. Source code development is a flexible method to improve the functions in software.
