Eutrophication of lake,a common occurrence, has been focus and got enhanced understanding in our country. How to effectively control non-point source pollution has been a hot area of research for several years. The programme of lake buffer zone, delineated from a lake management perspective in order to better protect the lake water, relieves or mitigates ecosystem destruction, disturbance and pollution to the lake water environment. Lake buffer zones is of great significance for non-point source pollution prevention and control, slowing the deterioration of the ecological environment of lakes and restoration of ecosystems and has attracted great attention in the academic and administrative departments. As to building lake buffer zone, its range is an important issue to consider. If the range is too small, it can not play good roals in the protection of lake. On the contrary, larger range will lead to a waste of resources. So, considering the state of social development and the scarce of land resources, how to establish a scientific and reasonable buffer zone range is a primary problem in the programme of lake buffer zone.Based on the in-depth analysis and study on mechanisms and connotation of lake buffer zones, the present study develops a methodology to determine the scope of lake buffer zone and carries on practical application in Zhushan Bay, Taihu Lake. The defining of the scope takes into consideration of land use within the buffer, the natural environment, function positioning, management, social support and so on. The methodology, withing a solid scientific foundation, combines the non-point source pollution load output model, lake water environmental capacity model, species area curve and Arc GIS technology, which is a big step forward the programme of lake buffer zone. The innovations in the dissertation are as bellow: This paper take the lead in first in researching lake buffer zone planning on watershed scale, scope planning technology and process was established. This research was used in lake buffer zone planning and assessment of Zhushan Bay; Research methods of landscape ecology and hydrology theories were used in non-point source pollution hazard assessment, to identify key area of objected water, in order to indicate the scope of the buffer zone, providing a new buffer zone planning lake the methods and ideas. The main outcomes:(1) Based on the GIS platform, the impact of non-point source pollution source and sink landscape spatial distribution pattern on the water body was analyzed by using river network analysis and river basin unit analysis..(2) This paper make a methodology of delimiting lake buffer zone range. The impact of pollution source area on lake water environment is researched by taking small watershed as research unit. For the generation and migration of non-point source pollutants, this paper opted in-situ pollution and distant cost to assess the hazard of non-point source pollution to water body, in order to determine the reasonable distribution of the buffer zone.(3) To determine the pollutant production weights of various land use patches through the Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP).(4) To carry on practical application in Zhushan Bay, Taihu Lake and to determine the scope of the buffer zone in Zhushan Bay.
