Besed on the National Science and Technology Major Project "High-grade CNC Machine Tool and Basic Manufacturing Equipment", taken flexible production lines of cylinder block and cylinder head as research objects, the report takes research on information feedback of tool characteristics states in life cycle, model specification of tool information, scheduling, life and cost management, and carries out the development of tool management system. The main works is as follows:(1) On the basis of investigating on the production lines of cylinder block and cylinder head of Faw Jiefang Automotive CO.,LTD Wuxi Diesel Engine Works five times, the paper takes research on business process and current situations of tool management. Analysis was carried out for the problems in tool management process. Based on the concept of lean management, the tool management thought and technology roadmap were put forward, and the tool management process was optimized.(2) Introducing state space theory, management model of tool information in life cycle was built, and the specification of mathematical model for tool management information was realized. Taking research on the regularity of information conversion in tool management, the characteristic state equations were built, and the algorithm was defined, which set foundation for automated management and procedural management of tool information.(3) The study of information traceback was carried out. By the development of data interface, the data integratin among ERP, tool library, tool auto-checking instrument and numerical control system was realized. It allows tool management information share and flow in an efficient way, and eliminate the phenomenon of information island. By the information nodes setting and the introduce of barcode technology, it realized the data collection and monitoring of tool management information and the information traceback in life cycle management.(4) Based on the real-time information of tool management, the tool management sheduling model driven by real-time information was built. The Genetic Algorithm was used to optimize the tool scheduling and adjust scheduling plan, then it can ensure the tool requirement and realize the efficient utilization of productive resources.(5) Life management, cost management and quality control was studied in the paper. Combined with the tool management demand in enterprise, it customized the development of production report, which allows the data statistic analysis in an efficient way. Then it can provide basis and support for management plan in the later period, and realize the management model driven by real-time information.(6) Tool management system was designed and developed. It integrated with tool library, tool auto-checking instrument and numerical control system to realize the life management, cost management and quality control. The tool management system has been successfully used in production lines of cylinder block and cylinder head of Faw Jiefang Automotive CO.,LTD Wuxi Diesel Engine Works, and has got a good application result.
