PAE resin is a water-solubile cationic and thermosetting resin, it is an eco-friendly wet strength agent and could be adapted to different p H value, in the paper industry has been widely used. However, as a thermosetting resin, its self-crosslinking properties would lead to gel easily during storage, then losing usability. Previous studies have found that, when the solid content is 12.5%, PAE resin has good storage stability and addition character. However, from the view of PAE resin application in the paper industry, the transportation, packaging and barrels recycling costs of this low solid content product have more than 10% of its price. Therefore, improving the solid content of PAE resin can reduce the cost of paper-making manufacturers significantly. In this paper, from the development of high solid content PAE resin, through studying on the mechanism of PAE resin gel and gel inhibition to develop the high solid content PAE resin. The main research results were as follows.The alkylation reaction of PAE resin is a reaction that would release acid, resulting in decreasing the p H of the reaction system. Increasing the initial p H of the reaction system could contribute to the alkylation reaction carried forward and reduce the reaction time. The gel of PAE resin is the polymerization reaction between the azetidional groups on PAE resin crosslinked and other grafted products.The p H of PAE resin during storage reduced after the first until gel. Control the p H value will help to improve storage stability of PAE resins, the free epichlorohydrin in product would significantly reduce the storage stability of the PAE resin. Temperature has a significant effect on the gel of PAE resin. Under acid conditions, high temperature could effectively suppress the alkylation reaction PAE resin, thereby improving the storage stability.Gel inhibitor of PAE resin reduces the reactivity of PAE resin, lead to lower wet strength performance.Improve the active amine content in PAE resin molecular structure can make up for a loss of Wet strength performance. To partly replace diethylenetetramine by triethylenetetramine could improve the active amine content of PAE resin.The synthesis process was optimized with adipic acid, diethylenetetramine, triethylenetetramine and epichlorohydrin as raw materials. Under following conditions, the wet strength performance of PAE resin is not lower than conventional products. The synthesis process was, amine: adipic acid is 1.02:1(mole ratio), diethylenetetramine: triethylenetetramine is 0.9:0.1(mile ratio), reaction time is 270 min, and reaction temperature is 175℃. The properties of polyamide are: viscosity 21.3m Pa·s, acid value 121.69mg·g-1, amine value 203.21 mg·g-1. The alkylation synthesis process was, polyamide: epichlorohydrin is 1.1:1(mole ratio), the intial reaction p H is 9.0, water added in the intial: polyamide is 5:1(mass ratio), reaction temperature is 70℃. After the above synthesis process, gel inhibitor was used to terminate reaction when PAE resin reaching a certain viscosity, the p H is 3-4 and solid content is 25%,PAE resins with high solid content products are got and the storage time is more than 6 months. When the addition was 1%(compared to dry pulp), the wet strength of paper(30g·m-2) reached 22.5%, similar to the PAE resin goods.
