In this research, Styrene-acrylic-maleic anhydride copolymers were prepared through free radical polymerization using Styrene(St), Maleic anhydride(MA), Acrylic acid(AA) as monomer, BPO and TBPB as initiator, Dipropylene glycol dimethyl ether as solvent. The influences of the monomer ratio, amount of initiator, polymerization temperature, ammount of solvent on the composition of St-MA-AA copolymer were investigated. The acid number and water-solubility of the resin were increased by addition of MA. The best preparation condition of the copolymer was found through the experimental data.St-LMA-AA resin was synthesized using lauriy methacrylate(LMA) with longer side-chain instead of maleic anhydride of the copolymer St-MA-AA. The composition of the polymer were discussed. At the same time, the two kinds of resins were used as dispersant in water-based. The dispersion and stability of pigment, ratio of pigment and resin and performance of water-based ink were studied. The results showed that the synthetic resin as dispersants can be applied to water-based ink, Dispersion of pigment of St-LMA-AA resin was better than St-MA-AA resin.Because of the presence of aromatic and anhydride functionalities, the molecular and segmental structures of SMA can be modified easily. In this study, a class of comb-like polymer surfactants were synthesized using ethanol (Et), butanol (Bu) and ethylene glycol ether (EE) as the esterifying agent of SMA. The influences of esterification agent, catalyst and reaction temperatur on the esterification product of SMA were investigated. It was found that esterification agent with longer carbon chain make the product lower viscosity and smaller degree of esterification. For esterification product of SMA has worse heat resistance and better flexibility comparing to the SMA.
