Based on analyzing the advantages of the micro-display projector (MDP), micro-display projection is the most ideal way to realize the large screen display. Perfect image is one of the targets of MDP's. It is determined by the resolution and the color reproduction. So the article is surrounding the two aspects to study the MDP's image quality. The aspect of the resolution is divided into two parts to be analyzed. At the first, the methods of evaluating the resolution of projection lens are studied. Two methods is introduced particularly. The one is with comparing the modulation of the special rectangle grating and of the fact projection's by subjective to evaluate the resolution of the lens with special instrument. The other is by measuring the modulation of different scale rectangle grating to obtain the lens' modulation transfer function. The two methods can get the accordant results. At the second, based on the theory of Fourier transform and linear system, measure the projection system's resolution. Namely, use the moving CCD and measure the system's modulation transfer function. At the aspect of color reproduction, based on the theory of chromaticity color reproduction, the image quality of typical MDPs which are LCD with three panels and DLP with single panel is compared of color characteristics in color gamut, reference white, gray scale and color uniformity. And get the result that the DLP's color reproduction quality is more excellent than the LCD's. The method of improving LCD's image quality is brought forward. How influence the image quality of the color wheel's center wavelength in DLP and the contrst ratio both in DLP and LCD is analysed quantitatively. The image gray scale's influence factors and the evaluation ways, and the methods of characterising and calibration gray scale are analysed. The direction of calibrating the future gray scale is put forward.
