GIS (Geographical Information System) is an information system, which collects, stores, analyses, processes and displays the geographical information. With the technological development, GIS has been applicated widely. But because the data targets that GIS deals with is space objects, there are very strong space-time characteristics, the means to obtain data is complicated and various, it forms the initial data of many kinds of formats. In addition GIS for a very long time in regarding concrete project as the isolated state of development of center. A lot of GIS software has one's own data formats. This makes data sharing of GIS become a particularly outstanding question. Because the figure data format of the geographical information system is different, it brings great inconvenience to information sharing. It is the important problem needing solving in GIS's application system development in recent years to solve and integrate in the data source of the multi-format.In such case, people expect the data sharing between various GIS system is complimented. In order to promote Geo-spatial data share and avoid duplication of data collection, Geo-spatial data exchange and share research of different GIS systems is significant and necessary. Because many units or departments use MapInfo and ArcGIS software, so a lot of Geo-spatial data has been produced into MapInfo and ArcGIS formats. This paper does chiefly research on the theory and practice about Geo-Spatial data interchanging and sharing of MapInfo and ArcInfo GIS platforms. Through establishing conversion models and the correspondeing conversion algorithms between MapInfo Interchange format MIF format and ArcGIS Shapefile format, their mutual conversion and two formats data sharing is complimented. So this paper will notonly have a practical value, but also have some theoretical significance to data exchange and share between other GIS platforms. The main contributions of this dissertation are as follow:1. It expounds Domestic and foreign research situation of data exchanging and sharing, introduces research purpose.2. By analysis and comparison of methods of present data exchange, data share is complimented by external data interchanging model.3. Contents of MIF (ie. MapInfo interchange Format) and Shapefile Format of ArcGIS are analyzed and researched fully.4. Based on Chapter 3, differences of MIF and Shapefile format are analyzed. Data exchange model and algorithm of MIF and Shapefile are designed. Contents and methods of MIF and Shapefile format exchange are elaboraed.5. Based on the algorithm and the methods which are presented in this paper, a MIF and Shapefile format exchange system is developed with VC++ tool.
