According to the theme of vortex merging problem, the thesis here first introduced the importance of vortices in flow fields, and analyzed the reasons for wake vortex hazard. The contributions of vortex merging processes for wake vortex control and wing surface pressure distribution are also explained. The research methods are also summarized and analyzed. Then the study process is concluded. The works include:1. Effects of continuum, smooth, boundary-fitted, orthogonal grids on numerical results are discussed. Then the generation process of 2-D hyperbolic grids is elucidated. The three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are discretized using finite volume method, and the time marching method is upwind scheme. The managements of far filed boundary conditions and some industrial turbulence models also discussed.2. Some vortex models are given and their characteristics are discussed. The free vorticity convection, two dimensional vortex merging process with and without disturbance are studied using spectral method. The separation effects on 2-D vortex merging process are also analyzed.3. The three dimensional Bergers vortex model is given and discussed. The LES turbulence model is elucidated detailedly. The single plate vortex is numerically simulated. The effect of grid scales is discussed. The merging process with different separation distances are studied by solving NS equations with LES turbulence model. Then effects of separation distance on merging process are analyzed.4. From concluding the work here, the prospects of future study and industrial applications are discussed.
