Cable-supported systems are applied on civil engineering structures and mechanical systems extensively, in which cable-stayed beam has been adopted as the object to study in the dissertation. Five chapters are included: the first chapter presents a comprehensive statement of engineering application of the cable-stayed systems. Meanwhile, not only does it list the long history and academic achievements made on the research of linear and non-linear dynamics of cables and beams respectively, as well as the measures taken to control the undesired vibrations, it also gives a summary about the current investigation of dynamic interaction between cable and beam. The second chapter introduces in brief the derivation of cable's profile function and axial tension with respect to the static equilibrium configuration of suspended cable with two supports either at the same level or not, based on the continuum hypothesis. Moreover, it makes a concise introduction about the non-linear dynamic features of in-plane vibration coupled with the out-of-plane vibration of a single cable. In this chapter, the sensitivity of cable's eigenfrequency to variation of the horizontal component of initial tension and the ratio of sag to length at different angles is discussed. The third chapter proposed a simplified model to analyze the non-linear dynamic characteristics of a cable-stayed beam, according to which the governing equations are derived. The fourth chapter focuses on the analysis of occurrence of internal resonance and stability in order to discuss the non-linear coupling oscillation of the simplified model. Finally, in the fifth chapter the conclusion is obtained and prospects in this field are presented.Cable-stayed beam is representative of those stayed structures, which has been found wide engineering application throughout the world owing to its simple forces transmitting. Under external excitation, cables are susceptible to...
