Lanzhou city is one of the major seismic fortified city whose seismic fortification intensity is 8 of all the capital city in our country. The city is located in two mountains and besides the Huanghe River. So its geological conditions is very complex and some bad geological processes such as instability slope etc is in vibrancy. With the development of city population the site for construction is being scarcity and more and more buildings are constructed on the seismic unfavorable site. With careful investigation to the characteristic of the seismic unfavorable site and the basic geological situation of northern and southern mountain, we can conclude that loess slope problems are the critical research area of the seismic unfavorable site of Lanzhou.Based on wide range investigation, the domestic and foreign research outcomes about earthquake disaster in loess area are summarized; the characteristic of loess and loess slope and the factors influencing the stability of loess slope are summarized; the collapse behavior in the action of earthquake is studied; the methods analyzing the stability of loess collapse in action of earthquake are summarized. The stability of some typical slope is analyzed by computer software directing towards the characteristic of slope in Lanzhou city.Simultaneously summarize the domestic and foreign research outcomes of treatment of collapse in loess area, study the design conception and method of slope retaining considering earthquake action. By means of building design examples, we can conclude that the seismic design of site and foundation is critical measure in Lanzhou area. Details of seismic design must be used to design foundation and construe of building.By means of studying and practicing, some advice is brought forward for seismic exploration and design, which provides the scientific foundation for seismic fortification and disaster protection of engineering structure in seismic unfavorable site of Lanzhou city.
