In geophysical exploration, the gravity and magnetic field are usually measured on an irregular topography. The positions of anomaly stations remain unchanged after all sorts of corrections, thus a method to process and translate potential field observed on an uneven surface is necessary. The equivalent source techniques bear both the advantages - wide ranges of applicability and high accuracy, and the disadvantage - low speed in dealing with large quantity of data, that may be normally got rid of through dividing potential data into small pieces, which would give rise to the "hard to put pictures together" problem.Based on analysis of existing methods, taking magnetic anomaly for example, a series of magnetic dipoles were selected as equivalent sources, the magnetic moments of which were inversed by an iterative method constructed in space domain, to process and translate the potential field in this thesis. The "hard to put pictures together" problem was solved by that method and therefore the application value of equivalent sources techniques were enhanced. Two leading errors brought in by the equivalent sources techniques revealed by analysis of them mainly come from insufficient measured data and the equal sources inversion error. The former could be deduced by selecting appropriate depths of equal sources and the later by introducing an iterative inversion. The feasibility of the method was testified both theoretically and practically in this thesis. The methodology could also be applied in gravity field processing and translating.
