This paper consists of three parts: the current design of the curtain-wall glass, the basic theory of the large-deflection of thin penal and the method of weighted residuals, and the analysis of the curtain-wall glass based on the theory of weighted residuals. The first part contains mechanical-behavior of glass curtain-wall materials, load calculation of curtain-wall glass and structural design. The normal method of curtain-wall glass design is systematically elaborated. In the second part the basic theories, method of weighted residuals and theory of the large-deflection of thin penal based on the principle of minimal displacement of large elastic deformation and the variational principle of large-deflection, are introduced in the subject to solve the problem. In the third part analysis and calculation according to the method of weighted residuals is presented, from establishing control equations and boundary conditions, selecting trial function, to calculating the stress and deflection loaded by wind-pressure or complex forces.Generally the curtain-wall glass is loaded complexly. The loads include wind-pressure (the main load), gravitational force, seismic force and temperature-effect, etc.A linear theory is used in the current design of a glass panel of curtain-wall. However that is very simple, but it is too conservative. A lot of examples show that the deflection of a glass panel based on a linear method is always more than the thickness of glass so that a nonlinear analysis is reasonable. This paper deals with the stress and the deflection of a curtain-wall glass caused by wind pressure and complex loads based on a nonlinear theory. The approach applied in the paper is the method of weighted residuals. In the condition when a glass penal loaded by wind-pressure the analytical method of weighted residuals is presented, while by complex forces numerical one. The calculate data show that the maximum normal stress given by the nonlinear method is 15-20% less than that by linear one.
