Surface reverse engineering is a process that creates the geometry models based on the data of real objects and the research on reverse engineering has become an independent and hot field recently, Reverse engineering can be divided into two sub fields; one is involved in sample data obtaining technology, another is involved in surface reconstruction technology. Data obtaining technology is concerned about how to get the points data from the object surfaces, which provide the probability of dealing with the complicated surfaces. Surface reconstruction technology is concerned about how to build the geometry model based on the unorganized 3D data. Surface reconstruction methods include reconstruction with smooth surfaces and reconstruction with discrete surfaces. The content of this thesis include the introduction of the reverse engineer especially in surface reconstruction aspect, the methods of point cloud simplification, and the reconstruction of subdivision surface.Irregular 3d point cloud data, which now is extensive used in computer-aided geometric design, has the such feature that huge scale, no topology etc. For surface data acquisition, modern 3D scanning devices are capable of producing point sets that contain millions of sample points. Reducing the complexity of such data sets is one of the key preprocessing techniques for subsequent processing. It can make storage, transmission, computation, and display more efficient And now subdivision surface are getting more attentions for its features of less storage space, fast speed of generating level of detail surface, suitable for hierachical design etc.
