Hemispheric imaging is very important not only on military purpose but also on domestic areas . In this project, we have discussed the imaging mechanism of the hemispheric imaging and the optical characteristic of its main element, the panoramic annular lens (PAL). In details, the main works is as follows. The background of the hemi-spherical panoramic imaging is reviewed. The imaging mechanism of the PAL-the flat cylindric perspective (FCP) and its optical characteristic is analyzed. An experiment system is set up, the preliminary experiments of the panoramic annular imaging are conducted. The collection, acquisition, and the storage of the panoramic annular image are conducted. We have carried on the image processing of the PAL image on the space domain and the frequency domain respectively.Upon the theoretic analyze of the mechanism of the PAL, the method to value the imaging qualification and its Modulate Transfer Function (MTF) is discussed..The domino effect of Atmospheric Optics (AO) and Atmospheric Temperature (AT) is simulated with experiments. A method called Correcting Vector Error is introduced to precise locate the center of the disturbed image. In this paper, all the programs were programmed in VC++. The result is satisfying.
