The science in 21 en is the science about the study of complexity, and the study of complexity and system theory is come down in one continuous line. Since the origination of General System Theory, many concepts and means have been arguing. In General System Theory which written with description by V.Bertalanffy, the concept "emergence" was introduced into system theory. To the stage of complexity studying, emergence was considered as a clear scientific theme. But scientists in the time from General System Theory to complexity studying today all have a tendence of "engaging in speculation and profiteering" when definiting the emergence. This paper reviews the history of the key concept "emergence" firstly. After introducing the variable idea, conclude five features of emergence which as a complex phenomenon. Above are the major contents of the first part. The second part try to give a concept of emergence because the features of phenomenon should be deepen to the concept building. Due to system science have never definited the emergence explicitly, this part analyzes the scattered descriptions of emergence in general science and compares the definition which B.Bunge gave, combining the developing trend of today's science: E.Morin's "Conscious Science", gives a trial definition. For going step further, the third part induces five mechanisms of emergence; and organizes the five mechanisms as a pattern to clear the generating procedure of emergence; finally conclude the epistemological concept of emergence.
