The seasonal thermal mixing and stratification in Bohai Sea was simulated by a three-dimensional shelf ocean model, based on fluid dynamics, thermodynamics and k - e turbulence closure model. The three-dimensional primitive equations were derived for ocean in the condition of turbulence, by using the Reynods time average method. The turbulence closure models were introduced to close the equations. The zero-equation turbulence closure model was tried at first, but the results were not satisfied comparing with the statistic results.By applying k - e turbulence closure model, which express properly the turbulent mixing effect, the seasonal thermal mixing and stratification were well simulated. The stratification starts at mid-March, first around Laizhou Bay and Bohai Bay. The strength of stratification reaches its maximum at mid-July. After that, the stratification decreases and finally disappears (well mixed) at the end of October. The results agree well with the statistic results that were multi-annual monthly mean. Based on the model, the detail spatial and temporal evolution of the thermal mixing and stratification can be investigated. The approach adopted in the thesis was proven to be successful, and can be generally applied to study the mixing and stratification process in other shallow seas and shelf oceans.
