Currently, land use change is a hot issue of global change. Land use change is a special natural social phenomenon, involving the natural properties of land resources and human land use patterns. Driving mechanism of land-use change has been a focus of the land use change research. Among them, studies on the mechanism of humanity driving help to understand the driving mechanism of the regional land use and cover change in the law, to predict the future trends of land use and to draw up policies of sustainable land use. This paper selected typical region of the southern Loess Plateau of study, use the software of ArcGIS and ERDAS and SPSS, selected the two TM images of 1980 and 2005 year as data sources as the object analyzed the process of land use change in quantitative changes, spatial distribution, structure, speed, relative regional differences and land use degree. On this basis, collecting socio-economic statistical indicators, the paper studied the human driving factors by the qualitative and quantitative method.Through this research, conclusions were as follows:(1) In the past 25 years, from the year of 1980 to 2005. the area change rate obeyed the following sequence:construction land (34.82%)>unused land (-21.86%)>farm land (-1.44%)> water (0.7%)>grass land (0.26%)>wood land (0.11%). and the land use annual change rate obeyed the following sequence:construction land (1.393%)>unused land (-0.874%)>farm land (-0.058%) >water (0.028%)>grass land (0.01%)>wood land (0.004%). Farm land convert into construction land, unused land convert into construction land were the main types of land use change.(2) In the past 25 years, from the year of 1980 to 2005. land use change have a obvious differences in time and spatial distribution. In the time aspect, from 1980 to 2005, farm land, grass land and unused land was reducing, wood land and construction land was increasing. In the spatial aspect, the land change city obeyed the following sequence:Jiyuan, Luoyang, Guyuan, Yangquan, Yuncheng, SanMenxia, Pingliang. Zhengzhou, Qingyang. Dingxi, Xi'an, Weinan, Baoji, Xianyang, Tianshui, Jincheng, Linfen, Jinzhong. Changzhi. Taiyuan, Yan'an, Lvliang, Tongchuan.(3) In the past 25 years, from the year of 1980 to 2005, land use degree change is also more significant.Overall, in southern Loess Plateau, for instance, Baoji, Yan'an City, Jincheng. Yuncheng City, Jiyuan County, Tianshui City, Dingxi City, Pingliang City and Qingyang City land use are in an adjustment period or recession; Xi'an, Tongchuan City. Xianyang, Weinan City, Taiyuan, Yangquan, Changzhi City, Luliang City, Jinzhong City, Linfen City. Zhengzhou, Luoyang and Sanmenxia City and Guyuan are in the development of land use.(4) In the past 25 years, from the year of 1980 to 2005, land use change is intense in southern Loess Plateau, and land use quantity change there exists significant regional differences, and land use types are unstable. The relative change rate merely shows regional differences.(5) The humanistic driving factors of land use change in the southern areas of Loess Plateau include:demographic, economic, technology and policy, etc. The main driving factor of farmland change in the southern regions of Loess Plateau are the increase of population, the development of national economy and raising the level of consumption and raise the level of agricultural science and technology.(6) Land use in the south of Loess Plateau is changing rapidly, on the one hand, cultivated land, grassland, forest land, unused land area decreased, on the other hand, water area and construction land area increased. The arable land transformed into construction land is the major changes.(7) The ecological policies, including returning land for farming to forestry has restrained the decreasing trend of woodland and grassland. The development of national economy and population increase is the dominant factor of land use change in the southern Loess Plateau. With economic development and population growth, industrialization and urbanization continue to increase; construction land squeezed a large number of cultivated land, resulting in cultivated land area decreased and construction land increased.
