On the early stage of The Republic, China's supply and marketing cooperatives went through its golden period of rapid development. The paper investigates the early situation of the supply and marketing co-op of China with case study of the co-operatives in Wenjiang area of Sichuan province, thus explore its rising background, the nature, the historical significance as well as the enlightenment for the development of present-day supply and marketing cooperatives.The author integrates macro study with micro analysis, starting from generalization and theories and ending with deliberate discussion and specific examples. The article is composed of three main parts. Chapter one, which is the part of introduction, explains the topic issue and its academic value, and then points out the defining of the basic scope, the review, the methods and guidelines. At last, it briefly presents the train of thought and the structure.Chapter two, which is the main body, reviews the theoretical achievements of the cooperatives by revolutionary mentors and the historical background under which the supply and marketing co-op of the early Republic rapidly grew. Taking the economy of Wenjiang area in Sichuan province as an example, it discusses the organization, the nature and the operation of the co-op. The author considers that the prosperity of the supply and marketing cooperatives is due to the first-generation leaders'collective study of the concept of Cooperative from Marxism-Leninism theories. In addition, it is also the inheritance and development of past experience, the results of objective historical conditions of the New China.From the beginning of the nation's constructional career, the supply and marketing cooperatives, as a economic type was concluded in the overall frame of the building of the nation's politics and economy, the integration of societies and national development. Accordingly, including the supply and marketing cooperatives, many cooperative activities were regarded as the means for promoting economic development, accelerating the industrialization process and social transformation.The nature of the supply and marketing cooperatives is not just an essential question in economic theory, but also a crucial question in the practice of the co-op. Based on the investigation and demonstration on the management, staff, and wages of Wenjiang Supply and Marketing Cooperatives, the thesis concludes that the early supply and marketing cooperatives of the Republic is strongly controlled by the government.Chapter three, which is the conclusive part, evaluates the supply and marketing cooperatives'significance in the development of Chinese economy and puts objective judgment on its historical position. By this way, the author would search out some instructions for reforming and developing cooperative economy in the context of the new era. The positive analysis on the practice of the co-op economy in Wenjiang area of Sichuan province, demonstrates that the establishment of supply and marketing cooperatives on the early stage of the Republic, has largely promoted the national economy, especially the rural economy, and accelerated the process of national industrialization.
