A Study On Tso Tsung Tang's Scientific And Technological Thoughts

Tso Tsung Tang is one of the most influential figures in both the modernization of Chinese industrial technologies and the internationalization of Chinese military technologies. However, there is little literature on his thoughts from the above two angels. This thesis is mainly based on Complete Works of Tso Tsung Tang as well as research fruits of other scholars in this field. It has made a thorough and deep investigation on Tso Tsung Tang's scientific and technological thoughts, aiming at broadening the horizon of researches on Tso Tsung Tang and enriching the fruits of this field. To be specific, this thesis has made a detailed discussion on his scientific and technological values in two aspects, namely, science is a powerful leverage in building a strong army, military and civilian technologies are of the same importance. Tso Tsung Tang's civilian industrial and military technological thoughts are also discussed in this thesis. The main content of Tso Tsung Tang's military technological thoughts is summarized into three sentences: bettering troops and simplifying arms; depending on economy; developing artillery. Lastly, it makes a brief comment on the implications of his scientific and technological thoughts, which is the extension of Chinese modern industrial thoughts, the development of Chinese modern military technological thoughts; the importance mix of eastern and western scientific thoughts.
