A Study On The Current Internationalization Strategy Of China Merchants Bank

With the full explorsion of financial crisis,a tendency of M&A (mergers and acquisitions) has been starting to expand in global banking, the joint-stock banks in china have also joined in this tendency over the past two years. The study objective of this thesis is the China Merchants Bank Corp.,Ltd,which drawn much attention for the establishment of New York branch and the acquisition of Wing Lung Bank in Hong Kong last year. By analyzing the international development of China Merchants Bank and comparing it with the state-owned bank's,the author finds out the the same reason of internationalization for both and the different characters of internationalization from each other. Then the analysis comes to the futural international strategy of China Merchants Bank,by taking into account the macro-environment,industry environment and internal environment,the author compares different international strategies,and finds out that the differentiation-focus strategy is the best choice for China Merchants Bank. Finally,the thesis sets the acquisition of Wing Lung Bank as an example,by analyzing and assessing the strategic implementation of international M&A from the different progresses (before-purchase,purchasing and after-purchase),the author come to the final conclusion: in consideration of the uncertain financial situation ,China Merchants Bank should focus on the integration of Wing Lung Bank and seek the M&A opportunities from international financial center on the basis of New York branch. But in the long term future, the differentiation-focus strategy should be highly promoted,and China Merchants Bank should take branch self-establishment as the main way and esacquisitions as a supplement to enter the emerging markets. and then provide superior product and service for those Chinese "going-out" companies and those local companies which have investment in china.
