Hotel industry, one of the traditional ones, began to develop even earlier than the Tang Dynasty. Due to the prosperity of politics, economy, culture and transportation during the nearly-300-year development of the Tang Dynasty, there was a sharp upsurge in the economic and cultural exchanges between different regions as well as between other nations and China, hence encouraging the prosperous development of hotel industry.This paper aims at studying the development of hotel industry in the Tang Dynasty to give an overview of this industry, to explore its historical foundation as well as to analyze the causes and influences of its development taking its survey, operation characteristics, hotel management and government's control over hotels into consideration, hence obtaining a profound knowledge about the social development in that period.There are seven parts in this paper:First is Introduction, which is mainly devoted to introducing the foundation and thoughts of this whole paper.Second comes Historical Foundation for Hotel Industry Development in the Tang Dynasty, which mainly describes the development of hotel industry before the Tang Dynasty in order to put it across that everything is closely related to certain social and historical preconditions.Third is Development of Hotel Industry in the Tang Dynasty, which describes the distribution and development of three kinds of hotels with different managers and different sources of fund, including government hotels, folk hotels and temple hotels.Fourth is Operation and Management of Hotel Industry in the Tang Dynasty, which is the key point of the whole paper. The following characteristics can be spotted in the operation of Tang's hotel industry: first, great emphasis on location selection; second, diversified operating subjects; third, emphasis on market solicitation; fourth, a combination between commercial and trade activities and hotel development; fifth, comfortable and desirable hotel environment. Besides its relatively complete service items and facilities, hotel industry in the Tang Dynasty had strict management regulations including those about security, identity verification, "no single guest permitted", utilization and reception. In addition, this part also involves the development and management of temple hotels.Fifth comes Tang Governments Management of Hotel Industry. With the large scale and big profit of hotel industry in the Tang Dynasty, the government conducted its management over this industry in order to maintain its normal economic and political orders as well as to increase its income, which is reflected in organizations, laws and policies and management of fund.Sixth is Causes of Prosperity of Hotel Industry in the Tang Dynasty. The development of Tang's hotels depends on the number of floating population brought about by social and economic development. In this aspect, the rapid development of Tang's hotels should be attributed to the developed transportation system, floating candidates and businessmen as well as tourists from different places at that time.Seventh is Social Influence of Hotel Industry in the Tang Dynasty. The development of Tang's hotel industry has affected different aspects of life at that time. This paper mainly elaborates on its influence on poetry culture, dinning culture and cultural exchange.The last part, Conclusion, sums up the whole paper by giving the new characteristics and causes of Tang's hotel industry.
