Pawing is a kind of credit on the basis of materials. Pawing industry has emerged for a long time in the human history and mainly exists as a small-scale social activity. Qing dynasty was the most developed and prosperous period in the Chinese pawing history. Its total number, scale, type, distribution and capital were prominent. Shanxi merchant dealing with pawing, also knows as west pawnbroker, is the most important component of Shanxi merchant, especial financial merchant, and the most important part of the study of Shanxi merchant. However, seen from the current situation, the study for Shanxi merchant is nearly empty and lack of systematical research achievements. The paper interprets capital situation and scale of Shanxi pawning by means of economics, statistics, history and social science methods.The paper first combs its up and down status, then researches pawnbroker how to get profit maximization in the market rate through collecting and wielding capital and tries to estimate the total number of pawning capital and profit in order to comprehend the development of Shanxi pawing industry thoroughly.The article is divided into two parts: the first part includes the chapter one and the chapter two, mainly introduce pawnbroker activities and its subsequent declining situation, comb the development of west pawnbroker in the whole country on clues of changes of shopping numbers and the initial capital, analyzes its features of declining. The first part provides detailed and accurate historical data for analysis of capital, rate and profit of the second part. The second part includes the chapter three, the chapter four, and the chapter five, analyzing the capital situation, rate and profit changes and so on. The chapter three mainly illustrates its capital source and changes, and capital changing trend and so on, pay attention to the difference of opening capital, flowing capital and distribution capital and estimates its total capital. The chapter four analyzes rate changes and reasons combined with financial rate changes and its trend, discusses its rate stipulation and implementation during the process of analysis. The chapter five analyzes the relation among capital of west pawnbroker, rate and profit change, exploits factors influencing profit changes and concludes its changing trend and estimates its total profit.
