The policy of expanding exports and restricting imports have led a huge surplus in China's international balance of payments in recent years. In 2007, China's trade surplus is 262.2 billion U.S. dollars, there is a substantial growth over that of 2006. The huge trade surplus has brought China two problems which can not be ignored. The other one is that the foreign exchange reserves have reached 1530 billion, which intensified the pressure on RMB appreciation, and also triggered the domestic inflation. In this situation, we can not ignore the impacts of the import to the economic growth as we used to be. Are imports the negative factors of economic growth? Is the role of imports only limited to meet the demand and to improve the supplement? What mechanisms do imports through to impact the economic growth? Is it powerful? All these questions request clear conclusions. It is, therefore, the significance of this article. This dissertation includes six chapters. The first chapter introduced the purpose of selecting this topic and the methodology of research. The second chapter reviewed relative literatures on the effect of import on economic growth, and gave summaries of two points: one is positive effect and the other is negative. The third chapter introduced the development of importation and its management system since the found of new China. The fourth chapter analyzed the conduction mechanism completely through which import affects economic growth. The fifth chapter did empirical work of the paper. Advanced methods of economic mythology was adopted to set up an economic model, then testified and get the import contribution coefficient. The last one made some suggestion on import policy of China based on the above research. The conclusions of this dissertation include:1. Macro aspect: There is a positive effect of import on economic growth. GDP will increase 0.067% when importation increases 1 %.2. Micro aspect(Exploration): The import of enterprise can promote its business growth. The business grows 0.62% when the importation increases 1 %.3.
