Salt industry is directly related to a nation's economy and peaple's livelihood. In China, for a long time in the past, the production and sale of salt had a status of monopoly specially granted by the government. However, at a time of reform of economic systems, China's salt industry is also confronted with the task to realize two fundamental transformations so that it will be possible to introduce market mechanism while macro-economic control can still be exercised.Based on researches of Tianjin's salt market, the present paper reveals how China's salt industry, while mainly regulated by the"visible hand"of government control, confronts a new environment characterized by market economy. Paying full attention to the"invisible hand"of market mechanism, the industry has been endeavoring to make itself more competitive by introducing a market-oriented sales strategy, strengthening researches and development of salt market, providing good service, and optimizing distribution of resources.Proceeding from realities of China's salt market, this paper applies theories of market economy in modern economics, marketing, and management economics to its analysis of the market environment, market needs , of Tianjin's salt industry. With regard to the development of Tianjin's salt market, the paper makes an effort to present a marketing mix based on six P's as well as strategies to maintain and expand the present market share. In its discussion and analysis of various, the paper endeavors to combine theories practice, macro analysis with micro analysis, and quantitative analysis with qualitative analysis.
