This paper studies timber intra-industry trade between China and developed countries based on comparative advantage and intra-industry trade theory. Firstly, this paper reviews the current status, geographical distribution and commodity structure of China's timber trade. Secondly, according to timber trade data, this paper calculates and analyzes the actual level of timer intra-industry trade between China and developed countries from viewpoint of country and product. On aspect of country level, this paper compares the whole conditions of timber intra-industry trade between China and typical developed countries, such as the United States, Japan, Canada, and Europe Union, and concludes that China is still staying at timber inter-industrial trade with developed countries. However, except for Europe Union, China is transforming from inter-industrial trade to intra-industry trade with other three largest countries. On aspect of product level, this paper analyzes the change of intra-industry trade from 1995 to 2004 focusing on major timber products, such as sawnwood, wood-based wood, paper and paperboard and furniture. Among these products, intra-industry trade index of paper and paperboard, plywood, fiberboard, is relatively higher than that of sawnwood, particleboard and furniture. Lastly, this paper brings forward some countermeasures on how to develop China's timber industry and trade from viewpoint of intra-industry trade.
