In the former perception, people believe that the Chinese staff members of the state-owned enterprises lack the spirit of innovation and taking risks while those of the Sino-American joint ventures are open, brave and venturous in the work. But with the advancement of society and the further development of the reform and open-policy, have great changes taken place about the above-mentioned old ideas?Based on the assumption, the goal of this study is to compare the meaning-of–work (MOW) values held by Chinese employees in state-owned enterprises with those held by Chinese employees in Sino-American joint ventures from cross-cultural perspective. The comparison between the two types of employees is worthy of consideration.MOW-International Research Team proposed that MOW was conceptualized in terms of three major domains: centrality of work as a life role, societal norms about working and work goals in 1987. In the dissertation, the author proposed five hypotheses about the meaning–of-work values of Chinese employees in both state-owned enterprises and Sino-American joint ventures on the basis of this model. Then an empirical research is made to see whether there is much ground for the hypotheses.The statements of the questionnaire are designed by the author of this dissertation on the basis of the three questionnaires on MOW respectively developed by Baker N.A. et al. and Harpaz I. et al..In this dissertation, the author analyzed specifically the Chinese employees'attitude toward five aspects, that is, work centrality, entitlement and obligation, extrinsic orientation, intrinsic orientation and interpersonal relations. From the analysis, we draw the following conclusions:1.To the extrinsic orientation, employees in state-owned enterprises still pay attention to work stability while staff in Sino-American joint ventures care more about salary and promotion.2. Through the study, the employees of state-owned enterprises and Sino-American joint ventures both think job is very important to them. They pay attention to their rights and emphasize their responsibility for their companies. To the intrinsic orientation, the employees know what they want to get from working such as variety, autonomy, interesting and challenging jobs.
