With the globalization of technology and economy, competition between international enterprises is becoming fiercer. Most shipping companies are confronted the new challenge and opportunity caused by the temporal and spatial expansion of business. The financial crisis happened in 2008 influenced all the industries including shipping industry. Shipping companies have to fight with the risks all the time. With the good market trend, many hidden risks can not be easily detected, but many risks can be converted into the impairment of benefit when the situation has become not so kind. The more and more studies about risks of shipping companies are appeared in shipping market, but the quantitative research is still less. With the optimization method, this thesis calculated the capacity expansion and ship form selection under different risk series. The calculation aims at providing the decision-making for the shipping enterprise operator and improving the theory research in this field. There are six chapters in this paper. Firstly, the background is introduced and relevant literatures are summarized. Secondly, based on the definition and classification of risk, risk of dry bulk shipping companies caused by transportation capacity expansion is introduced systematically. Thirdly, an evaluation factors system is established and indicators of the classes are identified. In the fourth chapter, an model is established to optimize the relation between operation of companies and transportation capacity. Fifthly, an empirical analysis is taken to testify the model. In the final chapter, an evaluation of the model and direction of future research is identified.
