Volatile phenols have been listed as the environmental priority controlled pollutants due to the characteristics of teratogenic, carcinogenic, mutagenic toxicity and biological accumulating, which are seriously harm human’ health. The content level of volatile phenols has become one of the important indicators for environmental pollution evaluation. In this paper, considering the complex matrix effect of Soil, low residual concentration and strong volatile property of volatile phenols, the author combines the purge and trap samples preprocessing technology which is direct sampling, simple, convenient and pollution-free with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry technology which is fast, sensitive, accurately qualitative and quantitative to establish a method for determination of volatile phenols in soil. This paper systematically studies the instrumental conditions of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, such as the type of column, injection temperature and mode, carrier gas flow rate, temperature program, ion source temperature, mass spectrometry scanning way. It also optimizes the pretreatment conditions of the purge and trap, including capture trap types, purging temperature and time, desorption temperature and time, baking temperature and time, the concentration of sodium chloride and acid. Under the optimized conditions,8kinds of volatile phenols are determined, which covers all environmental priority controlled volatile phenols of China and5kinds of environmental priority controlled volatile phenols of EPA. This method has the advantages of direct sampling, simple operation, saving time and reagents, and no pollution. It also reduces sample preprocessing, avoids errors due to the introduction of artificial operation, and improves the speed and accuracy of analysis, so it is suitable for the analysis of batch samples’ determination. According to the datas of experiments, the method has a good linear correlation coefficient. The average recoveries of volatile phenols ranges from55%to106%, the detection limit of the method from1.912×10-2μg/kg to1.410μ g/kg, and the relative standard deviation from3.2%to10.3%. The datas are better than or close to EPA index, meet the requirements of quality control. The result of the analysis of actual soil sample shows that this region’soil has been polluted by volatile phenols. There is a further exploration space in the application of purge and trap-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for actural soil sample analysis.
