It is well known that the amount of aluminum alkyls in the Ziegler-Natta catalyst has no obvious influence on the catalytic activity in the prepolymerization. However, in the polymerization stage, sintering occurs at higher amount of aluminum alkyls. Alternatively, it is a good way to monitor the aluminum alkyls amount by monitoring the Al-Ti ratio of the catalyst because of the constant amount of the Ti catalyst. However, it is difficult to monitor the Al-Ti ratio by regular methods. There are no GB standards and industry standards to monitor the Al-Ti ratio. With more and more polyethylene industries coming out because of the progressive development of the polyethylene market, it is necessary to develop an industry standard to monitor the Al-Ti ratio. Here, we developed a method to prepare the samples and monitor the Al-Ti ratio in the prepolymers by X ray fluorescence spectroscopy, by considering the practical situation of PetroChina Lanzhou Petrochemical Company. The influence of radiation time, voltage and current of the X-ray tube were investigated. With this method, the Al-Ti ratio in the prepolymers can be easily monitored.
