Gear is one of the most common kind of mechanical transmission types with highefficiency, accurate transmission ratio and long work life.Related technologies have beenvery mature while facing both practical challenges and opportunities. The world famousgear companies keep secrets of their gears’ technology,so if we want to change the statusof China’s gear technology, we actually need continuous innovation and research on thetheory.Therefore,research on grinding method of straight bevel gears, based on thegenerating line method is necessary. It will be helpful to solve problems in gearmanufacturing, improve gears’ quality,promote the development of gear manufacturingand even improve the overall competitiveness of our country.In this paper, according to the generating line method, a straight bevel gear’s grindingwheel and its fixture are designed and analyzed,simulations of gear grinding are studied,mathematical models of grinding force Fzand grinding temperature Tmare established,and process parameters are optimized.The main contents include the following aspects.1. Learn gear grinding theory and the new generating line method, detail involutestraight bevel gears principles;then,straight bevel gear’s parameters are calculated andgear’s model is designed with CAD and CATIA. Finally,design simulation of gear surfacegrinding motion with CATIA ‘DMU Kinematics’tool,which verifies that the generatingline method is correct and could be applied to straight bevel gears manufacturing.2. Design and analysis of a grinding wheel and its fixture are completed. According toHandbooks, grinding wheel is mainly designed in terms of grinding abrasive, hardness,particle size, geometry, etc., then calcuate some key parameters of grinding wheel anddesign its model with CAD and CATIA,finally with the FEM software ANSYS, analyzethe structure of the grinding wheel using modal and harmonic responsemodules.Besides,fixture of the gringding wheel is also designed and analyzed.The results show that structures of the grinding wheel and its fixture are reasonable, they could be usedfor straight bevel gears actual machining.3. According to grinding process,choose some parameters which affect the quality of tgears teeth surface, and design simulations of gear grinding,using the softwareDEFORM-3D, explore the effects of grinding parameters on gears’ surface,grinding forceand grinding temperature.4.Make a reasonable data processing in MATLAB and establish mathematical modelsbetween grinding force Fzand grinding depth ap,as well as grinding temperature Tmandgrinding speed vc.Parameters optimization is complet so as to provide theoretical basis forstraight bevel gears actual grinding process at last.
