Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer(ABS) are wide ly used inautomotive, electrical and electronic compone nts,construction materia ls fie lds.With the continuo us improve ment o f sa fety aware ness,engineering p lastics s uchas ABS raised high require me nts on the fla me retardant. In this paper, severalnew ha logen-free carbon agents are synthes ized,ammo nium polyp hosphate (APP)is mixed with new ha lo gen-free carbon agents as intumescent fla me retardantsystem ABS fla me retardant materia ls cons isting o f intumescent fla me retardantsystem are prepared.Synthesis conditions,the structure and thermal stability of PEPA,PEPB, PEPS arestudied. The results show that PEPA synthetic solvents select dioxane, the best ratio ofphosphorus oxychloride and pentaerythritol is1:1.2, the reaction time is8h yield95%;PEPB,PEPS synthetic solvents select acetonitrile, acid binding agent is triethylamine,feed ratio was1:1.2, reaction time is8h yield of93%and88%. FIR and1H NMRresults proved the correctness of the structure, thermal stability is better thanpentaerythritol.Flame retardant ABS composites are prepared by adding carbon agents onlyand APP/MPR/carbon agents.Flame retardant properties,therma l stability andmecha nica l properties of flame retardant ABS composites are studied.The resultsshow that flame retardant properties of composites prepared b y adding carbon agentsonly is not as well as the composites prepared by adding APP/MPR.whenAPP:MPR:carbon agents is2:1:2and3:3:4,total load ing is30wt%,the verticalburning rating can achieve V-0, carbon agent is PEPA and PEPB, PEPS performs poorretardant effect.Intumescent fla me retardant syste m improves the thermal stability ofABS. Mechanical properties of ABS flame retardant composites decreased co mparedwith pure ABS.With the increase of total loading of IFR,mechanical properties of ABSflame retardant composites turn worse.The compact char layer of ABS flame retardant composites is studied. The resultshow that the compact char layer of composites prepared by adding carbon agentsonly a nd adding APP only a nd adding APP/MPR is not dense with lo t’s ofholes,while the compact char layer of ABS flame retardant composites prepared byadding IFR is dense without holes. The effects of different flame retardant synergist on ABS flame retardantcomposites and the compact char layer of ABS flame retardant composites addedsynergist are studied.. The results show that SiO2performs best as synergist and thecoMPact char layer of ABS flame retardant composites added SiO2is dense, sphericalSiO2particles are evenly distributed.
