In order to solve the shortage of Class-A building insulation materials in the market, combined with the rich resource of coal-tar pitch and expand the practical application range of carbon foams, carbon foams were prepared by self-foaming method. Specifically chose the coal-tar pitch which has rich resource and inexpensive price in China, firstly modulated into high softening point pitch which was then used as the raw material to prepare carbon foams by self-foaming method, engineering scale test was studied to promote its industrial progress. The innovation of this paper is:1) Selected coal-tar pitch as the raw material and changed its composition by vacummizing, to realize foaming under atomospheric pressure.2) Coal-tar pitch eventually transformed into carbon foams for energy-saving construction area, not only expand the scope of application of carbon foams but also effectively solve the large-scale use of domestic coal-tar pitch. During the research process of structure control and amplification of coal-tar pitch based-carbon foams, mainly obtain the following results or conclusion:1) High softening point pitch (softening point temperature is241℃) modified by vacummizing condition350~420℃/0.5-3h, the group composition is HS-1.6%, HI-TS-3.77%, TI-PS-9.42%, PI-QS-19.45%, QI-65.76%, foaming effect will be good.2) Carbon foams prepared under1.5MPa/500℃, its core size is100-200um,density is0.501g/cm3and compressive strength is3.50MPa.3)Φ45×100mm、Φ200×200mm large size carbon foams can be prepared by modified high softening point pitch after changing its foaming condition.4) According to GB/T14402-2007'GB/T5464-2010,carbon foams meets the state requirements of Class-A material combustion performance, and the thermal conductivity is0.0798W/(m-K).
