In the rapid development of economy and technology, people have paid more and more attention to their health status, as well as the surrounding environment. It is of great significance to get a coating surface with antibacterial function to suppress the virus on furniture and public transport facilities. Quaternary ammonium antibacterial agents have drawn a great attention because of their low cost, low toxicity and various antibacterial types. Tetra-needle like ZnO whiskers have been extensively investigated due to its special spatial structure. However, in conjunction with the UV-curable coatings, an appropriate quaternary structure should be employed. In this way, surface modification of tetra-needle like ZnO whiskers with a certain functional groups is important, and we can not only make better use of their characteristics, but also expand the field of organic-inorganic composite materials.In this paper, we have synthesized quaternary ammonium antibacterial agents with double-bonds and surface modified tetra-needle like ZnO whiskers. UV-curable antibacterial coatings were obtained by adding these two compounds into UV-curable coatings, and further tests were carried out. It can be demonstrated that the addition of surface-modified quaternary ammonium salt and surface modificated tetra-needle like ZnO whiskers made the UV-curable coatings antibacterial, while the other properties unaffected. The details are as follows:1. Two series quaternary ammonium antimicrobial agent with double bonds functional group is prepared, and1R and NMR spectra are carried out to determine their structure.2. The modification method of tetra-needle like ZnO whiskers have been investigated by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and an optimal method was taken. We have chosen anhydrous toluene as solvent, silane coupling agent with a high proportion, and the surface modification is carried out under nitrogen method. The hydrophobic properties of modified tetra-needle like ZnO whiskers have been significantly improved.3、Different concentrations of zinc chloride solution were used to prepare rod like zinc oxide with aspect ratio of6:1and5:1by hydrothermal method, followed by surface modification. The structure of zinc oxide is determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD).4、Mix the prepared quaternary ammonium salt, surface-modified tetra-needle like ZnO whiskers and UV-curable coating formulations under ultraviolet light radiation, and a kind of UV-curable antibacterial coating has been obtained. The coating can effectively inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus (S. Aureus) and Escherichia coli (E.coli), and the hardness was also greatly improved. With the improvement of antimicrobial resistance and hardness, the other properties, however, has not been affected severely. The results demonstrated that with5%(mass fraction) quaternary ammonium antibacterial agents and3%surface modified zinc oxide whisker, the antibacterial rate could reach100%and hardness achieve H.
