In this work, a new of production process furfural with corncob hydrolysis wasinvestigated over SnO2-Co3O4/C (biochar) catalysts. It was prepared from the degradationsolution and solid residues of corncob hydrolysis, in combination with mixture hydroxide(Sn(OH)4,Co(OH)2) under concentration and continue procedures of carbonization. In thedegradation solution of corncob hydrolysis, there were nine sugar components. TheSnO2-Co3O4/C (biochar) catalyst in this work presents strong Lewis acidity, SnO2and Co3O4in the catalyst were reduced to Sn and Co after reaction. The suitable conditions for the preparation of SnO2-Co3O4/C catalyst were optimized asfollowing: the mixture composition with1.5:150(w/v) of lignocellulose residue toconcentrated saccharide solution, and the molar ratio of Sn/Co to2. The obtainedSnO2-Co3O4-2/C catalyst with SnO2content of30%and an acid density of0.542mmol/g hasperformed catalytic activity for corncob degradation.Effect of SnO2content, the ratio of Sn/Co, reaction time, reaction temperature,mass-volume ratio of corncob to water and catalyst dosage on the hydrolysis of corncobcatalyzed by SnO2-Co3O4/C catalyst were also investigated in this paper. The suitableconditions for the production of furfural were as follows,0.06:1(w/w) of catalyst to corncob,1:24(w/v) of corncob to water, at a reaction temperature of180°C for duration200min, andthe furfural yield of30.1%was achieved. The re-used catalyst can be recovered80%byseparation and washing procedure assisting ultrasonic and vibration. The mechanism for corncob hydrolysis over SnO2-Co3O4-2/C catalyst to produce sobluesugars and furfural is proposed in this paper. The H3O+may take hemicellulose and celluloseconvert to soluble sugars by saccharification, following the Lewis acid sites fromSnO2-Co3O4-2/C catalyst make xylose and glucose isomerizes to xylulose and fructose, andthen to give the products of furfural and a little HMF by dehydration.
